Getting to know St. Josemaria through the eyes of Pope Benedict XVI

"To be a saint is nothing other than to speak with God as a friend speaks with a friend.  This is holiness.", Pope Benedict XVI explained in an article he wrote (as then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger) on the occasion of the canonization of St Josemaria in 2002.

"Holiness", he continues, "is this profound contact with God, becoming a friend of God: it is letting the Other work, the Only One who can really make the world both good and happy.  And if, then, Josemaria Escriva speaks of a calling of all to be saints, I think that he is actually referring to this personal experience of his of not having done incredible things by himself, but of having let God work."

More recently, Pope Benedict XVI met with young people from the UNIV Congress in Rome.  During the gathering, the Holy Father quoted St. Josemaria encouraging the participants of the UNIV Congress: “..in this way, throughout your life you will realize the desires of St. Josemaría Escriva: 'How I wish your bearing and conversation were such that, on seeing or hearing you, people would say: This man reads the life of Jesus Christ.'"

UNIV Congress is an annual gathering of university students in Rome that is sponsored by the Prelature of Opus Dei and originally inspired by St. Josemaria Escriva.
