Fifth Annual Novena for a Happy and Faithful Marriage (July 17-25, 2018)

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Join the St. Josemaria Institute for our Fifth Annual Novena for a Happy and Faithful Marriage on July 17-25, 2018.

The novena is inspired by St Josemaria Escriva’s desire to help all married couples, and those preparing for marriage, to find meaning and encouragement in their vocation through a commitment to daily prayer and friendship with God. We’ve chosen these dates for the novena in preparation for the liturgical feast of SS. Anne and Joachim, the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary, on July 26th.

The Novena for a Happy and Faithful Marriage is available in a booklet from our shop:

Humane Vitae 50th Anniversary

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Humanae vitae, the encyclical of Pope Paul VI on the regulation of birth. We encourage you to also spend a few minutes each day of the novena to (re)read the encyclical and reflect on it’s teachings on married love and responsible parenthood, and how you and your spouse are called to become apostles to other married couples.

God’s Loving Design

“Married love particularly reveals its true nature and nobility when we realize that it takes its origin from God, who ‘is love,’ the Father ‘from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named.’

“Marriage, then, is far from being the effect of chance or the result of the blind evolution of natural forces. It is in reality the wise and provident institution of God the Creator, whose purpose was to effect in man His loving design. As a consequence, husband and wife, through that mutual gift of themselves, which is specific and exclusive to them alone, develop that union of two persons in which they perfect one another, cooperating with God in the generation and rearing of new lives.

“The marriage of those who have been baptized is, in addition, invested with the dignity of a sacramental sign of grace, for it represents the union of Christ and His Church.”

Pope Paul VI
Humanae vitae, no. 8

What is a novena?

A novena is a personal commitment that one makes to pray for nine consecutive days to ask God for answers to a specific request, struggle, or intention. The novena prayer is repeated each day and can be accompanied by reading and reflection. Novenas can be prayed throughout the year and are often prayed in preparation for a feast day of the Church.
