The Feast of Christ the King | iPray with the Gospel
And the people stood by, watching; but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!” The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him vinegar, and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” There was also an inscription over him, “This is the King of the Jews.”
Luke 23:35-43
Jesus is King of the Universe. King of the entire creation. But His Kingship is not obvious. He was crowned by Pilate on the Cross. He was killed on the day of His Coronation; but He rose from the dead. And over the years many people who proclaimed His Kingship have been killed as well. Where was their King when they died? If He is King… why is there so much evil in His kingdom? What is the King of the Universe doing about it?
J.R.R. Tolkien once referred to God as a great Composer. At the beginning of time He composed the most beautiful music. Knowing our instruments and our skills, He composed a perfect piece of music for His creatures to interpret. But we are free. We can follow the score as we like. The devil and many other skilled angels decided not to follow the score and made up their own melody to increase their own glory. The discordant noise of the devil and all evildoers clashed with the original composition and there was a violent war of sound.
But that didn’t stop God. He is Almighty: He is the Perfect Composer. God knows what the devil and his followers are going to play; so He has arranged a new score that wraps all that noise in a more beautiful composition and the result is even more harmonious than before. But you and I need to play that new score for Him; we, with our Christian life, have to play His ‘symphony’ the best we can. When we work, when we pray, when we help people and serve others, even when we rest and have a nice time, we are playing that ‘symphony’ the best we can, and we are making Jesus King of our lives. With our Christian lives we will show that Jesus is King. And all those who don’t want Jesus to reign will have to wake up to the Truth: Jesus is King and His Kingdom will have no end. Today, with Mary, Mother of the King, Queen of the Universe, we pray with all creation: Long live Christ the King!
