80 years ago, St. Josemaria made his first journey to Rome to seek official approval of Opus Dei from the Holy See to allow its apostolate to expand to other countries. In the years that followed, he constructed the central headquarters of Opus Dei and laid the foundation for initiatives in Rome that continue to serve the Church today.

Now, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his canonization (October 6, 2002), join the St. Josemaria Institute and VERSO Ministries for an unforgettable spiritual pilgrimage as we journey In the Footsteps of St. Josemaria Escriva to Rome!

WHY ROME?

St. Josemaria was once asked when did he first think about traveling to Rome, and his reply was both concise and revealing: “I’d never thought of coming to Rome,” he said. “But I had to come, because Opus Dei was born Roman.”

He further explained, “Rome will leave a deep and lasting mark on your soul, if you take advantage of your time here. And it will teach you to be more faithful children of the Church and to have a more supernatural love for the Holy Father.”

For Catholics, Rome is home—a return to our roots, the setting of the marvelous story of the infinite Love of God, who wants to reach all mankind. It is quite natural, therefore, for Catholics to wish to become more and more ‘Roman’.
