“Days on retreat. Recollection in order to know God,
to know yourself and thus to make progress.
A necessary time for discovering where and how you should change your life.
What should I do? What should I avoid?”
St. Josemaria Escriva
Furrow, no. 177
St. Josemaria Escriva encouraged all who sought to have a deeper relationship with God to set apart a few days a year for a spiritual retreat. A retreat is a time of quiet reflection and prayer, away from the daily routine, to examine one’s life in the presence of Jesus Christ: to see what is going well, to see what needs to change, to make resolutions and to begin again.
Throughout his priestly life, St. Josemaria preached many retreats to men, women, university students, priests and seminarians. In general, the retreats included daily Mass, time for confession and spiritual direction, and a series of meditations to help those on retreat to focus and go deeper in their conversations with God, helping them to get to know Christ and themselves better.
SPIRITUAL RETREATS FROM THE ST. JOSEMARIA INSTITUTE
The spiritual retreats from the St. Josemaria Institute are audio collections of meditations preached by priests of Opus Dei. The retreats are recommended for anyone seeking to go deeper in the Gospel, getting to know Christ, learning to pray, keeping the presence of God throughout their day, or finding direction/meaning at a particular time of life…
Whether you make your retreat at home or go away to a retreat center, the spiritual retreats will help to guide you in your prayer. See below for a list of retreats offered by the St. Josemaria Institute.
SUGGESTIONS FOR LISTENING TO A RETREAT
- Set apart specific days and times to listen to the retreat (preferably 3 – 4 consecutive days).
- Reflect: Read and meditate on the Scripture passages referenced in the meditations.
- Keep a Journal: Write down moments from the meditations that strike you, as well as the thoughts, inspirations and resolutions that arise from your prayer and reflection.
- If you would like a guide to journaling, download our Meditation Journal Page.
- Strive to Keep Silence: A retreat requires interior silence and exterior silence, which helps us maintain a lasting conversation with our Lord.
