About the Author: Pope Benedict XVI, born Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger on April 16, 1927, in Bavaria, Germany, was Pope from 2005 to 2013. Ordained as a priest in 1951, he became a prominent theologian and professor. Appointed Archbishop of Munich and Freising and made a cardinal by Pope Paul VI in 1977, he later served as Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Elected Pope in 2005, he resigned in 2013 and became Pope Emeritus until his death in 2022. Known for his prolific writings, Benedict’s papacy was marked by his emphasis on maintaining doctrinal continuity and engaging in interfaith dialogue.
